For many years growing up, I thought any prayer we spoke had to be pre-approved by the church. At the dinner table, we always said the “our father” prayer (or the Lord’s prayer). There also seemed to be rules about which prayer you recited in a certain circumstance. I never heard anyone in my family say a prayer that was from the heart and from their own words. There was the problem. I viewed the method of how to pray as a series of rules and motions to please God.
Now that I’m older, I have learned how to pray from my heart and what it really means to pray to God. It was a bit awkward at first. Yet like anything new, the more I have prayed using my own words, the easier and more natural it has become. I specifically learned how to pray this way from a sermon given by Pastor Mark Driscoll out of Seattle.
In this particular sermon, Pastor Mark used the Lord’s prayer as an example of how God wants us to pray to Him. First and foremost, God wants us to view Him and call Him our father. God truly is our Father as He did create us. In knowing this, we learn the method of how to pray to a Father is by talking to Him. This may be difficult for some who have had awful earthly fathers. It’s so important in these cases that people remember humans are faulty but God is perfect. Therefore, God is nothing like earthly fathers. He is the perfect and true Father of all.
Pastor Mark makes another point on how to pray by stating that prayer should not be for show. It should not be a means to show how holy you are. Rather, prayers should be a means of communication to your Father, God. This is a private relationship between you and God. It is meant to be personal and intimate.
