Your priority when building a small business should always be branding. Yet, it seems to be the one thing that people spend the least amount of time and effort in when building a small business. Granted you probably haven’t had training in marketing to build an effective small business brand, but that shouldn’t stop you from giving it the attention it deserves. Let’s go over some basics about small business branding to get you started!
So what is small business branding? Well, branding is branding whether you are a large corporation or a small business owner. The only difference is that a large corporation has an unlimited amount of money to hire marketing and advertising specialists to create a brand, where as a small business owner you will have to get a bit creative.
Small business branding is about more than just a logo, color scheme and tagline. Branding is about a feeling you want to elicit to your market. An image you want to portray. It has to be something that is unforgettable by all that come across your brand and easily recognized as YOUR brand. That means, your brand, and small business, has to have personality. It also must be consistent. Your brand cannot change every few months or based on different audiences. It must remain steadfast so that it is easily recognized and understood by all.
Identify your market. Who exactly do you want to speak to? What are their wants, needs and desires? Make sure your small business brand talks to those aspects of your audience by eliciting a feeling that you have the solution to their wants, needs and desires.
Once you have your small business brand together, announce it to the world! Get your brand out there using simple Web 2.0 techniques that target your audience. The more people see your brand, the more attention and traffic your business gets. Create a buzz when launching your new brand by giving something of value to your target audience for free. A large buzz creates great traffic to your small business!
